The creative industry: Yeesh. On one hand, working in it can result in the most un-careery of all careers; an endlessly fulfilling extension of what you love into what you do. On the flipside, that same industry can be the ultimate soul-smoosher; a creativity killing monster leaving utter suckness in its wake.

If you’ve worked in it, chances are you’ve experienced both sides of it. The ideal client, the idol client, the client that shouldn’t even be a client because they should be out of business; they’re everywhere, and we’ve each developed our own way to deal with them. But when times get rough, we need reminding of why we’re in it in the first place– and when we need reminding, we need Joshua Gajownik.

Let's start things off right by saying this: Wow, did we love that Hand Job. Not that that's an atypical reaction for us (we'll take hand-drawn ABC's over Photoshop-perfected ones anytime), but regardless, that book just felt good in our hands.

Well Happy Friday to us, because the man behind Hand Job — the creatively inclined, Brooklyn-based Michael Perry — has just given us another. Over & Over, a book of people-drawn patterns, stays clear of the sexual innuendo that initially got our attention, but still manages to keep our attention in the same way that (your favorite punny porno title here) does. Or doesn't, or used to, or…hey. Sometimes, we just prefer a book.

Last time we checked in on Royal Remarkable (aka Joshua Gajownik), he was getting busy with Grafuck and Hand Job, two of the most graphically brilliant projects with sexual undertones that we’ve ever laid caresses on. Since then, the man’s been hard at work tuning out great stuff for clients like Burton, Nike and Nixon, and filling the time between with a piece for The Train Car Project, a promising group show featuring the work of 60 international artists.

The project (a brainchild of art collaborative PROCESS) supplied each artist with a train car illustration, either as a vector file or a screenprint. They were then instructed to take complete creative control over the trains, resulting in a miniaturized versions of THE BEST train cars you’ll ever not see chugging along the tracks. Check out a few of the participants completed work here, and if you are in the Brooklyn area on October 10th through the 16th, be sure to swing by Papa B Studios for a solid range of graffiti, digi, and artsy-in-general inspiration.

Our Spear Collective comrade RoyalRemarkable (aka Joshua Gajonik) will again be appearing in this year’s Grafuck, a yearly publication of erotic work from an international selection of artists. While normally using his skills to produced tons of work for Burton, Arkitip, and books like Hand Job (sounds sexual, but depending on your relationship with typography, really isn’t), Grafucks allow Joshua to explore his (and I quote) “humourous, poignant, and charming,” side by bringing together the work of illustrators, photographers, graphic designers and fine artists. The result is a seriously pretty outlet for built up sexual tension which will be released alongside a gallery show at California’s Nucleus Gallery on December 8th. You’ll see more of RoyalRemarkable’s work on the walls in that gallery should you choose to attend; if you can’t make it, works should be up for sale after opening night here.

If you take a moment to think back to May of this year, you may recall us telling you about Mike Perry’s typography compilation, Hand Job! A Catalogue of Type, which featured the work of Spear Collective Compatriot RoyalRemarkable and that of 54 other massively talented typographers.

Do you remember? Good. Now, snap out of flashback mode and start living in the present tense because thinking about the past is not going to get you to the Jen Bekman Gallery in New York City this Saturday, where Mike Perry will be signing copies of his book. Perry won’t be alone, though, he’ll be joined for a talk by Kate Bingaman-Burt, who while included in Perry’s book, also serves as the mastermind behind the exhibit currently on display, Obsessive Consumption, “a brand, company, website and art project developed as a means to explore and showcase her personal relationship with money, shopping, branding, credit cards, celebrity, advertising and marketing” through the employment of her versatile skills as a visual artist. Get thee to a gallery, more specifically the Jen Bekman gallery on Saturday from 3pm to 5pm.

Our good friend and Spear Collective comrade RoyalRemarkable has been busy with a few projects lately that I thought I’d relay to you all. First and foremost, he has some sick type work featured in a forthcoming catalog entitled Hand Job, recently completed by Mike Perry of Midwestisbest. It’s is a compilation of work by 55 of some of the most talented freehand typographers out there; slated for release at the end of August, you can buy it on presale at Amazon for $23.

RoyalRemarkable is also gearing up to do a permanent installation for Ogilvy & Mather’s new digital agency outpost in Durham, North Carolina. He promised to send us some photos when his art comes to life in the next few weeks, so we’ll keep you posted with his progress. When describing the gig to me, he said: “think nesting dolls and old school security gates.” Suffice to say, all of us here at JoshSpear.com are excited to see his concept come to life.

New guys and gals Limited Edition T’s, designed by our amigo and design-savvy ‘Royal Remarkable‘ (Josh Gajownik), have just been released on Monsieur T. The new design, ‘Don’t Stop,’ reflects Josh’s unique, fresh, and jet-set style, and with free shipping offered throughout the U.S. and Canada, it’s looking like these T’s are shaping up to be a perfect holiday gift. Don’t hesitate though– they only printed 48 mens and 36 ladies for this super-limited-edition run. Hurry hurry rapido!

Joshua Gajownik is a print designer experienced in, well, everything! His work includes screen printing, book binding , letter press, and laser cutting, oh, and he also does some design for the web, but I must add not web design. His site, RoyalRemarkable, shows numerous examples of his work, which takes brands like Ecko Red and infuses them with splashes of color and plenty of style. I really liked his LOMONOKIA Academic Project which merges lomographic photography style into Nokia cell phones as well as his Personal Illness Project, a vision of an ailment he created while sick. His hand drawn script faces are really great and each one reflects some of his influence and the idea that helped create it. Truly Remarkable, check this kids work out.
