Behance believes there are too many ideas in the world, and not enough action. The name is inspired by Thomas Edison’s famous quote, “genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” The conference is for people that already have great ideas, but need to make them happen. The speakers are all people that have a track record of executing their ideas again and again, successfully. Seth Godin, our Threadless friends, Michael Bierut from Pentagram, Scott Thomas, the director of new media for Obama’s campaign, our friend Ji Lee and a few other very impressive folks. Perhaps the 99% Conference will be the kick in the ass that people with great ideas sometimes need?
Get your tickets now. Seriously. April 16th and 17th. Use the code 99EARLY09 and get $100 off the regular ticket prices. This looks like it’s going to be an amazing event, and probably the first of many to come.

A little over a week ago we gave you fair warning of the exquisitely spontaneous design event that is this season of Layer Tennis. The 2009 season kicks off this afternoon at 2 p.m. CST with a match between Interactive Designer Brendan Dawes and Threadless’s own Jeffrey Kalmikoff, a graphic designer with a bloodlust for branding. While we can feel the tension building, there are only two ways to watch the drama unfold: follow the action on Twitter, or get a front row seat at the official layer tennis site by investing in some free season tickets. For a preview of today’s match, check out John Gruber’s Match Preview.

Our good pals over at Threadless are at it again for the holiday season, but this time they’ve gone recession conscious and dropped the price on hundreds of t-shirts to $5.00. Seriously awesome and unnecessary ($15 is cheap as it is), but what a great gift. Go check it out and be nude no more, like, now.

It seems like it was just the other day we were talking about Si Scotts, but if you are looking for something other than playing cards, the FUSShop has just added new print, ‘Hype Type', to their already robust collection of Si Scott prints. Just to give a reminder, these illustratons are hand-drawn, i.e. no Adobe. Just good ol' pen and paper produce these elegant black and white images. His fusion of illustration and typeface has gained him notarity and his work is becoming increasingly sought after, just ask Nike Europe and the BBC. This time it is going to run you a little more than the $6 playing cards — the prints are £59.99 and are limited to 100. Also, if you happen to be in Chicago over the next month be sure to check out his exhibition at the Threadless Gallery.

Time is running out to submit your guess for this week’s Big Ticket Tuesday. What does Josh have in his bag? A laptop? A change of clothes? Jars of his own urine? Your guess is as good as mine. And we have some good news. Although only one of you is going to be getting the Timbuk2 by Threadless bag, the two runners up (we did say there were three items in the bag) will get Threadless tees.
[ED NOTE: Yes, threatening Josh on the street and stealing his bag is a disqualification.]

It’s time again for another edition of Big Ticket Tuesday. This week we’re featuring one of the items we were high on a few weeks ago: Timbuk2 by Threadless collaboration
THE PRIZE: You’ll receive one of the three T-shirt inspired bags plus the matching shirt.
THIS WEEK’S RULES: What’s in the bag? The first person to correctly guess one of the three items that Josh has in his bag (excluding bag components like straps, zippers, etc.) at this moment wins. Fast, simple, and totally random. And, one guess per poster. The winner will be revealed Friday.

Sometimes bad things happen. A couple weeks ago, an unknown spider bit Matthew Woodson and sent him to the hospital. The doctor's report requires a weekly treatment until the wound heals; roughly eight months. To make matters worse, Matthew is “in between†health insurance companies, which means he needs to sell some art. Luckily, he’s really good and has a rap sheet with clients like Wired, American Express and Threadless to prove it. While scary medical bills stack up every week he is asking for commissioned artwork … and by asking we mean begging. He will do anything, large or small — yes, that even includes tattoo projects. He also has some great prints available here and a full list of his illustrations on his website. Having gone through a spider bite personally, I know it can be quite scary. We wish Matthew a quick recovery. He has left a web of contact details on his blog for commission information or just to send a supportive note.

For all of the modern, urban, design-savvy males out there, please don't call this bag a “murse.” Lots of guys these days have figured out the convenient utility of a good old messenger bag, but what happens if you want the ease of carrying around everything you own but still want to look a little street? That's where San Francisco-based bag makers Timbuk2 and perennial Josh Spear fav Threadless steps in.
Pumping up classic messenger bags from Timbuk2 with some of the most popular T-shirt graphics from Threadless, they've combined high-end graphic design with the need to carry stuff around with you. Even better, you can rock the matching bag and tee at the same time — if you think you're man enough to handle it.
Hot prints from New England-based design duo GlueKit, eclectic visual artist Julia Sonmi Heglund, and self-taught fine artist Robert Hardgrave adorn the three limited edition bags. Held to an exclusive 200 of each print (read: buy them now before they're gone) these bags are up for grabs now, directly from Timbuk2.

Threadless is our kind of store (for more proof, see here). Their designs are driven by the creative minds of both artists and their devout consumers. These are the kind of T-shirts that when we wear them, we always get the obligatory “OMG! Where did you get that?!” so now we just carry their business cards (we don’t speak to strangers).
And, starting July 11th, Threadless plans to really bring art to the forefront by holding “Go with the Flow,” an exhibition at their Chicago store/gallery, featuring the urban-inspired art of graphic designer/illustrator J. Byrnes. In the meantime, you can check out more of his gritty designs at adapt-studio.com

There is something really fun about describing things as French. Of course, it depends on the context; on JoshSpear.com we usually mean eloquent design mixed with some street art — mixed with awesome. So what if I told you there is a new site that focuses on the emergent French design and art print market and it is in English? L'affiche Moderne is something along the lines of threadless, in the sense that artist are invited to submit works. In great French fashion there isn't a user community to vote on what's cool. The owners of the site deciding if they like it or not. If they do, 300 limited edition prints are made on some nice paper and they go on sale. It's that easy, and that judgmental. Fortunately, they have great taste and prices — prints are 29â‚ or 59â‚. Go impress your Francophile friends.

We write about T-shirts a lot on this blog. And, why not? They’re in our closet, they fit — our jeans would be lost without them. However, we’re much more keen to write about tees that help African children get much-needed school uniforms. Common Threadz uses the same spiel other hip T-shirt moguls do about about up and coming artists creating eco-friendly shirts for celebrities that like their shirts arty and eco-friendly. But, the cash you’re dropping on these shirts directly funds children who can’t afford this expensive necessity. And these kids aren’t going to expensive prep schools — the fact is without a school uniform, they’re not allow to get an education. If you’re thinking about heading over to Threadless this morning (of which we’re big fans), detour and spend the same amount to do a bit of good.

We've never made our love of Threadless much of a secret. From their appearance on SpearTalks to the opening of their first retail store, to MIT’s business school’s labeling of them as master innovators, we've had our eye on them for quite a while. As both a constant flow of fresh creations from a plethora of designers and a source of hot new clothes, what's not to love?
The only thing better than getting some new summer tees to freshen up your quiver is getting them on the cheap. Say hello to Threadless' Summer Blockbuster Sale. From June 2nd to midnight on June 6th, 18 brand new designs and 18 reprints of smashes from the past will be on sale. Plus, the first 250 people to order over $100 worth of product (and we all know spending that much won't be difficult) will get their hands on a limited edition Threadless print.
Once you're decked out in your new gear, only one question will remain: should that cash you saved go toward a beer on the patio… or more Threadless?

Jan Willem Wennekes, also known as Stinger, crafts a killer monster. Well, “killer” in its most docile, endearing sense — because the creatures of this Netherlands-based designer have always had more success drawing aww's than arghh's!
As founder of Zeptonn Lab, Stinger cranks out his unique style of design for clients like PlayStation, Popcling, and Threadless, as well as a solid variety of art, design, and online publications. In between those projects, this eco-conscious designer spends his time creating some of the best books you've ever laid claws on, including one of our all-time favorites, Stingermania.
Just in time for the release of his newest book, Black & White Freedrawings (site coming soon), we chatted with Stinger about his work, his education, and how he's using both to make his world a pretty wonderful place.
