This morning I was reading the most recent issue of RollingStone Magazine and ran across quite the interesting statistic. Kurt Cobain has just surpassed Elvis Presley on Forbes Magazine’s ‘top-earning dead celebrities’ list. So although Cobain has been dead for 12 years, he made about $50 million in the past year. That is a pretty staggering statistic if you ask me. Supposedly he made so much in the past year because Courtney Love sold a 25% stake in Nirvana’s song catalog, and she has also been licensing Nirvana songs with the other (still living) band-mates. Look out for Nirvana tracks on shows like ‘CSI: Miami’ in the near future. Who knew Cobain had such a great estate planning strategy?

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7th, is election day. While this year is not the ‘biggie’ Presidential Election, it is every bit as important. Think of this blog post as a non-partison ‘kick in the ass’ to go vote tomorrow. Vote Democrat; vote Rebublican; vote Libertarian; but just VOTE. We need the will of the young people in this country to be reflected in our political representation on both local and national levels. Veek The Vote is adding some flare to election day. Urging ‘Don’t be a statistic on Election Day. Be an individual,’ Veek allows you to use your mobile phone’s video-cam feature to record your thoughts, experiences, and feelings on the elections. Once recorded, ping your message over to Veek The Vote at vote@veeker.com and they will distribute your message to veekthevote.com, YouthNoise.com, VEEKER.com, or even to your own website. This is a great way to bring to life what people are really thinking about politics during this election cycle.

Word Count, an oldie but goodie shines a positive light on information gathering. There are so many different ways of presenting information and with a large enough dataset, that presentation’s impact is even more substantial. Jonathan Harris’s application combs the British National Corpus database of more than 100 million words and takes the most 86,800 commonly used words in the English language. Word Count then sorts the words by order of frequency and presents it in a minimalistic left-to-right scrolling format. Aside from a numeric ranking, the words are sized by order of importance, with larger fonts representing more commonly used words. Lastly, you can search the database by either word or ranking. Visit the site today and scroll through the first dozen or so words. You may (or may not) be surprised at what you find.

I’m absolutely blown away as browsing the intricate paper work of Danish artist Peter Callesen. The series called ‘Papercut’ shows off an amazing attention to detail (and patience) with nothing but Acid-free A4 sized paper and glue. This piece is entitled ‘Distant Wish.’ Be sure to check out his whole portfolio, it’s very, very impressive.

Victionary recently launched these two new excellent looking titles, Nice To Meet You (left) and Neighbourhood (right). Nice To Meet You is somewhat of a reference/inspiration book which helps tell the secret on how to design a business card to draw others’ attention and make sure it doesn’t end up in the waste basket– the book contains hundreds of examples from literally dozens of artists worldwide. The second book, Neighbourhood is a book by Rinzen, an Australian design collective. The book is a collaborative project to bring artists from around the world together by giving each participant cloth ‘toys’ to paint, stitch, accessorize and restructure. After each piece is restructured, they’re photographed and the toys (parts) are passed on to the next artist to construct.
