Due to tape decks being nearly obsolete, the mixtape is fast becoming an extinct art form. However, the downside to the mixtape artistry was that if you wanted to share it with more than one person you had to make copies, which inevitably made the second and third generation version sound reasonably worse than the original. Mix CDs remedied the generation problem, but distribution still required sitting down and making multiple copies. Fortunately, with the popularity of the some thing called the ‘internet’, you knew someone was bound to remedy this problem. Enter Muxtape. The site, created by New York based web designer and photographer, Justin Oullette allows users to create their own mixtape by uploading their 12 song playlist, then storing said muxtape on their own subdomain. Users can then share their creation by sending a link to their friends. No copies to distribute. No mess. It’s all so very clean and filled with Ajax-y goodness. Anyone want to start a Muxtape club?

From Ed Templeton to the Art Dump and stretching back to the Dogtown days, the world of skate plays a big part in the creative process, one that runs parallel with the sport itself and constantly reinvents itself as long as its progenitor does. Maze Skate Shop, with sponsorship by Adidas Skateboarding here in Brazil, is putting on the first-ever dedicated show of art as was specifically influenced by skate with its Expo Skate Obsession. The excitement kicks off tonight. Participating artists include Apo Fousek (who recently did a stint at Eastpak), Prozak, Paulo Ito and Tinho. They’ve given paintings, drawings, photos and other designs to commemorate the show, with a percentage of all sold works going to a charity. Later, a book archiving these works and the show will be released in Portuguese and English. The show will sit inside Maze’s new space that will become the site of its new girls-only extension after the show ends.

Are you constantly afraid that a tree is going to come crashing through your bedroom window on a windy night and ruin everything you own and possibly crush sweet sleeping you. No? Well I am. However, since I visited Let Your Worries Go, I’ve learned to let my anxieties dissolve into the ether. The site, run by the charitable folks at Northwestern Mutual asks users to cast their individual concerns into the sea, sky, or space via a pretty sweet animation. Each click on certain icons denoting specific societal worries allows the financial network to donate to charitable organizations dealing with the specific social woes, such as Habitat for Humanity, America’s Second Harvest, and The YMCA. While my specific tree trials aren’t exactly covered such pressing issues as health & fitness, natural disaster, illness, hunger, and education are covered, amongst others. So go ahead, tell Northwestern Mutual your worries and they’ll and they’ll do their part to make them a thing of the past.

Site mainstay Scott Rench (aka Yosoh) was one of the proud winners of the UNKL UniPo-By-You contest, and his piece is finally for sale. The Chicago-based ceramic artist and illustrator was chosen from more than 400 entries. He would like to build an artist co-op if he won the lottery, likes to eat melted cheese and sugar, and is one of my favorite pals. Congrats Scott! Go buy yours now at rotofugi for a whopping $7.95, and support independent artists.

The ability to watch our favorite shows on the Internet has been a blessing to many folks who don’t have the time to catch their stories at the regular time they’re on. Anyone with the Internet can watch an episode of 30 Rock at their leisure, but unlike DVR, the Internet doesn’t always offer viewers the opportunity to skip those pesky commercials. The folks at Overlay.TV have come up with a solution for this promotional problem. Instead of getting rid of advertisements altogether, The interactive media startup out of Ottawa’s alternative is to integrate them into the program, via clickable product placement and information within the video player’s real estate, which appears throughout the course of the video. The site allows for ‘internet users, content owners and e-commerce sites to monetize and customize their video assets by overlaying contextual information directly onto online video content and linking to external websites.’ For instance, if you like a character’s backpack, you could click on it and find out where to buy it. If that’s not friendly to viewer and corporate behemoth alike then what, pray tell, is?

Domont loves DuPont. Not so much the prominent American industrialist family, but the producers of plastic film Mylar. Artist Jordan Domont uses the translucent son-of-Dacron(TM) to produce these multi-layered images using color drawing ink on 18″ x 24″ sheets. The unstable canvas gives Tina Fey and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson’s War the impression that they’re dissolving off the page (our apologies to the guy on the extreme left who looks like Philip Baker Hall. And, if it is the Magnolia actor, kudos to Domont for two three-named Philips in one drawing). A couple of sketches over at the website suggest Domont’s muse doesn’t stray far from Hollywood, with Michael Cera in Juno and creepy hippie Devendra Banhart. Since there isn’t much to click over there, if you are interested in securing one of the pieces of fantastic plastic, contact Jordan directly.

Japanese Industrial Designer Mac Funamizu has an eclectic Behance portfolio with projects that range from a tea cup with a detachable handle to fantasy mobile computer displays. We are particularly lusting for one of his latest concepts titled Future of Internet Search: Mobile Version. Funamizu imagines a clean, touch-screen, translucent project that embeds information over anything behind it for a whole new (revolutionary) level of contextual information! He also takes the time to demonstrate just how useful such an apparatus would be.

Each week, JoshSpear.com explores the latest projects by top creative professionals in the Behance Network and highlights a few that are pushing the edge of creative industry. Josh Spear also serves as an Advisor and Guest Curator for the Behance Network.
