There’s a certain ennui that sets in right after college graduation. It’s the first time that you’re free from an academic life you’ve been enduring since you were five, but it’s also the first time that you really have to figure out what the hell you’re doing. Harvard film student Kate T. Williamson returned from a year abroad in Japan (where she wrote her previous book, A Year in Japan) to live with her parents in Pennsylvania. Her new illustrated book, At a Crossroads: Between a Rock and My Parents’ Place (Princeton Architectural Press), out today, captures the humor of her stopover in American suburbia. It’s kind of like Dan Clowes graphic novel, Ghost World…but for the quarterlife set. Follow Williamson as she navigates the uncharted waters of Hall & Oats concerts and minor league baseball games, all the while trying to solve the problem of her next step.

ICFF time is almost here again, which means that our inbox is about to get flooded with contemporary furniture designers hawking their wares. One of the booths we will stop by though, is the Designboom Mart, which will feature new stuff from Ripple Design for the PAD Outdoor company. A couple of the inspired ideas we wish we came up with are an aluminum serving tray that has a perforated pattern which acts like a colander, and the Nuclear Planter, a playful pun shaped like the cooling towers from the infamous Three Mile Island disaster. If those aren’t your speed, not to worry. There’s only a 100,000 other products on the convention center floor. So make with the stoop sale, and clear some space in the living room, because we guarantee you’re going to come back to your apartment with decorative wheelbarrows full of home accessories.

When we have to look our most dapper, we can always turn to Rochester’s own Hickey Freeman. Whether it’s an important meeting or business lunch, the American clothier has traditional (and untraditional) accessories for our fashion sensibility. Like this line of ties. They range from your basic khaki or batik pattern tie, down to the bolder tattoo, artistic Lady Godiva, or über-classy “40 in a bag” designs. Yes, nothing says “I’m drunk at work and I love it” more than a power tie with a half-exposed bottle of OE.

Fashion label Electronic Poet say they’re a blend of the art and science of music and fashion — coincidentally, four of our favorite topics. They just recently launched the Spring/Summer 2008 Collection — and boy is it good. Our personal favorites include the Moog T-shirt, which celebrates Moog’s introduction of the synthesizer in 1964, Matsushita giving us the decks in 1969, and the quilted hoodies (they have some great hoodies!). Speaking of dedications, the entire line is an acknowledgment to DJ’s, producers, and bands who have broken boundaries and pushed the future of electronic music. We know this picture only shows details, but we encourage you to check out the whole line — it’s stellar. Available at Oki-Ni!

A lot of artistic expression can be attributed to the loss of one’s mind. The artist at his creative best as he descends into madness with a little help from drugs and alcohol. Head Case, an art contest being held in Australia to benefit victims of Acquired Brain Injury (which covers the debilitating effects of substance abuse, as well as other physical trauma that causes brain damage), doesn’t subscribe to that romantic notion. They’re more focused on the serious business of creating awareness, not only for the injured, but the people close to them. If you live in oz, and can paint, sketch, or shoot, submit your work on the theme of ABI to Skye Luckins (skye@buronorth.com). All submissions must be in by July 15, with final judging taking place at the Sofitel Hotel September 1 through 3, during a joint brain injury conference in Melbourne.
