After Godzilla emerged from the ocean to wreak havoc in the horrible 1998 film bearing his name, New Yorkers have longed to see large creatures duke it out on their shores once again. Even though that radioactive lizard is long gone that chance has finally come again. On August 23rd Kaiju Big Battle emerges from the murky depths of it’s usual home at Manhattan’s Webster Hall to descend upon Brooklyn. The event sponsored by MeanRed and Studio Kaiju, takes place at The Yard in Carrol Gardens and combines an enthusiasm for Japanese comic book monsters with the violently entertaining spectacle that is the wrestling match. For a small fee you’ll be able to see beasty hand-made behemoths locking horns with gruesome movie prop giants on the Bay of Gentrification known as the Gowanus Canal. Attendees will also be able to privy to some premium musical performances from by the likes of Peelander Z, Junk Science, Nick Hook and Team Facelift. Be there or be bodyslammed.

Big poster after the jump.

The explosively expressive British illustrator Russ Mills has updated his gallery with new prints. Which is good news. For one, it is always nice to see some new works from great artist such as Russ. Two, new prints to his online store should be coming soon. If you can’t wait to get some Russ on your walls then have no fear, he will be taking part in The Rud Propeller Show in Devon beginning this week. He’ll be there in person on the 21st (that’s Thursday). Buy him out and set up your own online Russ Mills print shop, you’ll double your money I promise. As for the rest of us, check out his new illustrations in his gallery.

Toy2r has done many collaborations with fashion labels over the years — from DKNY to tokidoki. Their latest range of collectible 2.5-inch Qee figures includes Mark Fairwhale (above) and LUISAVIAROMA (after the jump). The Mark Fairwhale brand was created in 1999 by Shanghai-based designer Mark Cheung. Cheung incorporated familiar elements of his clothing line into this elaborately detailed set of four figures. LUISAVIAROMA is a Florence, Italy based retailer of high-fashion from designers like Roberto Cavalli, Marc Jacobs and Jil Sander. For their set, they produced a series of five bear Qee. The Fairwhale Qee look great together or as standalone art toys. (In fact, an 8-inch Bear is also available.) The LUISAVIAROMA Qee work best as a cohesive group. Both sets are currently available in Toy2r’s new double window-box packaging at designer toy retailers worldwide.

Tokens may have gone out of style, but since they became “rare” items they’ve been coveted fashion accessories. Transit token cufflinks will run you at least a Benjamin, and now apparel designer Hangar 3 carries a line of necklaces that features the vintage tokens. They offer a diverse selection — unlike the pedestrian tokens from Boston or New York, you can pick up tokens from the 1934 World’s Fair and from Los Angeles on distressed leather or chain for a fraction of the cost of those cufflinks. We know what you’re thinking. L.A. has a subway?

Cheer up. According our watch, it’s still summer for another month (it’s a really big watch). That means you’re going to need some fashionable shades for the late season sun. How about a pair of Alex & Chloe sunglasses? We’ll assume you said yes.

The Prize: A set of Alex & Chloe sunglasses, one Santa Cruz style and one Cape Town (est. retail value, $190 each)

This Week’s Rules: We know our readers are savvy world travelers. For this Big Ticket Tuesday, we’re asking you to submit one pic of yourself wearing sunglasses in an exotic location. It can be a link on Flickr, Shutterfly, Picasa, et al., or you can send it directly to feedback [AT] joshspear.com. Also, provide a quick caption of where you are (we’re not frickin’ Carmen Sandiego over here). The reader with the farthest traveled specs will get two new pairs to continue the trek.

We’re always on the clock; literally. Sao Paulo’s Estudio 5 skips over the traditional agenda pad and designed a wood clock with a write and erasable surface so you can mark time for that “fun-time break” in chalk in between walking the dog and meeting the girlfriend’s parents for dinner. They’ve also got other irreverent surprises, like a soap in the form of a pencil that you can use to write messages to your roommates (like “It’s your turn to buy some tp, please!”) on the shower door that will appear with the help of steam the next time someone jumps in for a wash. We’re trying to track down a place in the States where you can find this stuff, so hang tight.
