The custom boutique hotels around the world all took notice to the Hotel des Arts in the heart of San Francisco’s downtown Union Square when it launched last year. Last year they showed their project called “Painted Rooms” at the “art hotel” with 16 custom painted rooms from people like David Choe and David DeRosa, among others. This year they’ve come back adding an additional dozen more rooms including painted rooms by Josh Feldman, The Vinyl Killers, Bryan Dawson and Maya Hayuk. Their roster of top notch underground and emerging artist created rooms is totally impressive–and the sky is the limit here–they say watch out for future painted rooms from folks like Shepard Fairey (Obey), and Dalek.

2 & 1/2 years and no comments? oh, well…guess i’m da furst.
The deluxe queens (queen bed with private bath) are an incredible deal for friskotown. Good location downtown, walking distance to the theater district, North Beach and Chinatown. i stay here when i want a “vacation” from where i live in the haight-ashbury, and put out-of-town guests here who i don’t want staying at my house. For $10 more you can get one of the “Artist” rooms which are OK if you’re into the kind of stuff published in Juxtapoz Magazine (where i first heard about this place), but i think that skateboard graphics-graffiti-obey-stuff is so tired– Except for Anthony Skirvin, it’s more decoration than art. Most of the works seem especially restrained by the constricts of a hotel room, none of it is political or even confrontational and doesn’t feel as free as the bombing we did in the 80’s. i added some stuff in a couple of the rooms a couple years ago and nobody noticed.

We stayed for a weekend at the Alias Kandinsky hotel and we had a fantastic time. We have previously stayed at other hotels in the Alias chain and we like the relaxed contemporary environment. The Kandinsky was not disappointing.

We had a lovely room - it was large (a king), beautifully furnished and had a great bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable, as were the chairs in the room.

We enjoyed drinks in the hotel bar and then had dinner in the hotel restaurant. The restaurant was fine - above average for hotel dining. Afterwards we went for a few drinks in the downstairs bar and sampled the cocktails.
