Look, I’m as excited as anyone for the new Radiohead album — but. I have a theory about this shady In Rainbows promo site: I think it’s some batty crackwhore’s attempt to take down a Mac or two. After all, from a scholarly perspective, the only thing all Mac users have in common (aside from their huge brain capacities, incredible sense of style, and perma-fresh breath, I mean) is Radiohead. This is a beautiful commonality, but one that ultimately puts us at risk for something our grade-A spam filters won’t even get the chance to detect. That anything could hurt our viking-like computers in the first place is questionable, but hey, just to be safe, let’s have our non-mac using, cheating ex-girlfriend/boyfriend download it first. Monitor the process over IM. Watch for unexplained “HoneyTongue17 has gone offline” notices. Report back here as soon as you know the outcome. Because if it is the real deal… well, we’re gonna need to get on that.

(In short: You can buy Radiohead’s new album for whatever price you deem appropriate. Apparently.)

Why does everyone refuse to believe it’s legit? It makes sense to me - a non-signed superband decides to do something unique - that shouldn’t be so outrageous, should it?

And besides, all order confirmations come from waste.uk.com - the official site for all radiohead orders.. That looks good to me..

Alright. Done ranting. Just seeing everyone call this a farce, and use the word “apparently” has been getting on my nerves. You may continue now.

Max, I really, really want to believe it’s legit. And it does make sense. it’s just such an incredible move on Radiohead’s behalf that it has the natural effect of making people wonder if it’s TOO good to believe. I mean, I totally felt like this about Swiffer, too, but then I tried it, and-whaddayaknow- the rumors were true. Here’s hoping the same goes for In Rainbows…

“It makes sense to me - a non-signed superband decides to do something unique - that shouldn’t be so outrageous, should it”
No, and not outrageous at all when you consider all the free publicity they are getting and the fact that radiohead fans are just the kind of fans who will pay for the album on principle. Steal from Radiohead? That must be what made everybody lie down on the ground.

Rob Monday, 10.01.07 @ 4:09 pm

Yeah. It is on Marketplace (the show from “American Public Media”).

I couldn’t believe it myself, and then I could. And then I couldn’t.
Now I can. And I love it!

Ian Smith Monday, 10.01.07 @ 6:24 pm

I put in 0.01 as a safe, but as soon as I get to listen to it I’m gonna pay $10. That’s a fair price to me. Not $15, not $20… $10.

Oh so cynical people can be! Radiohead, the world’s biggest unsigned band (as in unfettered, free) come up with the most obvious solution -D.I.Y. - and the music fans and heatseekers blink…..Jonny Greenwood from the band already posted today on their blog deadairspace.com that w.a.s.t.e. has been overwhelmed by the response and will take steps to improve things….now, let’s discuss what this means to those poor CD retailers who are now looking at what would normally have been their biggest quarter of the year, the run up to the holidays, minus a CD from the world’s biggest band.

I think it’s a goog pr campaign, a unique way to distinguish themeselves, and everybody’s talking about it this morning, from the States to Italy.

Actually, it’s a shame for brick and mortar cd retailers. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE what Radiohead is doing here, and will be ordering the box set, but I also love my local independent record store, who completely deserve the ridiculous amount of money I spend there. I’ll just have to buy something else from them to make up for it ;)

Andy Monday, 10.08.07 @ 10:37 am

I paid £.01 for the digital download but we’ll see when the 10th rolls around to see what I actually get. I have a feeling it’s legit. Any idea how many tracks are on the album?

It’s not unheard of for artists to have this policy. Onelinedrawing used to have people name their own price when purchasing his music.

Christina Wednesday, 10.10.07 @ 7:45 am

Well it’s the 10th, and I just downloaded my very own copy of In Rainbows, so far so good! Shame on you cynical fans. Actually, as I was downloading, I was waiting for my IE to crash only to be replaced by an alert window stating “Got Ya, Now you’re totally screwed.” But alas, it’s not too good to be true. I

Oink (ok computer-in rainbows): the sound a pig makes..remember paranoid android “Kicking, screaming gucci little piggy”…look at the inside cover ok OKC, where there is written “against demons”, in the right top..doesn’t it seem a pig?
