What an amazing experience, a picture is worth 1000 words. Tsukiji is the largest fish market in the world handling more than 2000 tons of more than 450 types of seafood. I was told today 1/6th of the world’s fish passes through this market before it goes around the world every single day. As promised here are a whole bunch of pictures after the jump– but be warned there is lots of fish blood, guts, and fairly gross stuff– all part of the beautiful process.

What a good collection of pictures.
As I live in western part of Japan, hardly see the scene of Tsukiji
though it is a kind of symbol of our seafood culture. Thanks.

I understand it is somewhat disgusting for you to see the cutting of eels
but it surely requires the 4-5 years training skill ;) Eel cook is
respected rather than usual cook of Japanese cuisine. Taste of eel is
so thick and different from other tastes in Japan. I think it would be
favoured by Westerns.

Best shot for me is the one of squids.

Tsukiji is indeed an amazing place - some even freakier ones at http://www.ronbrinkmann.com/pictures/japan_web/index.html, about 4/5ths of the way down the page. And further down… Snow Monkeys!

Dear Mr Spear

I write to seek permission to use some of your shots of Tsukiji market in a manual I am preparing for various African governments. The objective is to support them as they negotiate fisheries agreements with Japan, China, EU, Taiwan, Korea. Your pictures demonstrate the immense enteprise that is Tsukiji. The project is a non-profit venture by IUCN to provide the countries with a bit more power in their negotations with fleets and governments which currently have significant power. I am unfortunately not in a position to pay a royalty. Would you be able to grant permission for their use with attribution?
