My pal Jeff Staple is becoming a legend, if he isn’t one already. He’s an innovator, and really should need no introduction. He’s been shaking up the sneaker world with global collaborations, innovations and sick design for a long time. His legendary Nike Pigeon Dunks are still floating around eBay with $3000 price tags years later– and they caused riots around the world. He just (proudly) announced his collaboration with New Balance, the Pigeon 575 shown here– and we’re very excited for him. This time around there are 650 available globally. Interested in what else he has been up to and what the Pigeon means (other than crap on your sidewalk)? His Interview with Sneaker Freaker is fantastic, check it out.

He says “remember it’s only a sneaker.” We say keep calm and carry on. More pictures after the jump.

This is straight fire. I think everyone, including Jeff, are waiting to see what Beaverton’s response to this will be. I hope they’ll take phone orders!

undesign….

Putting color on an already complete shoe isn’t design, it’s a colorway, it’s intern work. The pigeon icon is just as ridiculous to be called “design”. Call it art if you like, but not design. The world needs more true designers like Jonathan Ive and James Dyson; men and women that make the world a better place through true innovation and hours of prototyping with a goal to make the world a better place. To say this”design” is innovative is an insult to true innovators and to state that he’s “shaking up” the sneaker world is only a mild complement; an observation of how fickle and innovation deficient the sneaker world truly is.

I’m with cavan on this one. My 14 year old son could have done this in his sleep.

cavan,
Thank you! Well said. People like this give designers a bad reputation as being pretentious no talent hipsters who focus on the ironic or absurd. It’s not even bad art. It looks like these were designed to be worn by Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller in a movie about him being a runner and in grammar school his grandmother stitched on the pigeons for good luck and he became known as the pigeon or some ridiculous nonsense like that after winning the race.

Love the haters. Didn’t notice anybody else with their own shoe, with our without a pigeon on it.
