On one of our evenings in Bali a few weeks ago, we thought it was time to treat ourselves to something truly special (okay, every night felt special), and after reading many reviews about the über famous Ku De Ta restaurant in Seminyak, we went for the crown jewel. Only seconds after opening the menu, the prices were a bit of a shock, coming from a place where you can eat delicious fresh fish for only a few dollars; seeing a $35 entree was hard to stomach, but the service, atmosphere and overall experience made up for it in spades. Tables were set around the outside of an enormous reflecting pool with a DJ set right at the edge. Soft red umbrellas were scattered along the catwalk above the beach — an incredible and idyllic place to share a drink at sunset. The scene was littered with the rich and pretty looking tourists (or rich locals, which there are very few) from Asia and Australia. The eclectic mix of local Indonesian food infused with French and Italian elements were elegantly presented and deliciously cooked by New Zealander, Chef Philip Davenport — who at this point is a local celebrity (and not to mention, probably very rich man). All said, Ku De Ta is definitely worth it for a special occasion — but not a deal you should be hunting for in Bali by any stretch of the imagination. If I could have done it any differently, I would have just gone for the environment, the drinks, and the view.

Hiya Josh

I though Ku De Ta was a tough call.

On the one hand it’s got a pretty pretentious undertone and symbolises all that is evil and cliched about global-trash tourism.

On the other hand the cocktails and music are good and the sunset is stunning.

My entree cost more than I paid for a whole day for the driver who brought me from Ubud to Kuta and back, which kind of negated any good feelings about the place for me.

I’m totally with you on your conclusion. Not somewhere I’d eat again, but I’d stretch out on one of those sun lounges to watch the sun go down for sure.

=) Marc

What a shame… I was there about 12 years ago, Eggs Benedict for 2 and real coffee was about AUD25 for breakfast AUD 60 for dinner x 2…I was just checking out whether it’s still around as am going back in December for a week…it’s a great spot..but it doesn’t sound like me anymore

I think Ku da ta is pretty damn special, since visiting the 1st time acouple of years ago, i make it a must everytime i visit the beautiful island. definitely a treat as it costs alot more than your average night out, but the setting, music, candles everywhere, cocktails, service, i just love it, its definitely a wow in my book.

Coming from London I didn’t find Ku da ta that expensive, just a little dangerous. Why? Well I was having great time with friends in this amazing venue when a tornado decided to strike it. As soon as I heard the noise and seen the furniture outside going airborne I knew I was in trouble. I dived under my table and when I surfaced it was like a bomb had hit the place. Lots of people screaming and crying, broken windows and glass everywhere. Thank God though I was still alive and more importantly my Jack Daniels was still on the table where I left it. Sadly I couldn’t drink it because of the broken glass everywhere. With the place in chaos we left the venue without paying the bill. It was one of the cheapest nights out I had in Bali although a little hair-raising.

I was in Bali for 4th time recently and yep place is expensive for Indonesian standard BUT as every thing in life you pay for what you get!! where else in Bali…or Asia for that matter do you get the combination of view, ambience quality of drinks and food, and impeccable service like that from local staff where english is their second language. these guys know how to operate and how to look after guests….and staff
My friend lives in Bali and reckons its better now then ever for food, drinks and service. He says there is a fairly new western manager who has a great unpretentious attitude, any way on the way to dinner one night I left my wallet in the taxi, the manager spent the next 3 hours trackin it down, He got it back with all the cash still there!!! How i dont know! and then would not accept a tip.
any way take it but leave it but I am yet to find a place quite like it any where else in the world!

If your going to spend money for food, go to Warisan! Delectable! If you want a nice sunset and a drink, go to Ku De ta!

Linda Thursday, 05.22.08 @ 3:14 am

I agree. Ku De Ta has to be one of my most favorite places in the world, coming in second would be Colliere in the South of France, so it’s pretty special! I have been going there for years and only recently returned a few weeks ago. I have to say I don’t think the food is as good as it used to be, but you will not get a better spot for a drink, music and a an awesome sunset.

I had the most smashing time of my life celebrating my 50th BD with 10 close friends at Ku de ta the bookings was done from Jakarta by my sister… the table was set in the middle garden of the restaurant the food was excellent thanks to the chef..and the service was very very good ,friendly and professional…Thanks a million to the manager Mr. Marcus Wilson and all the waiters whose done a great job in making my celebration a happy memory…the price was up to the top quality of the whole package…so don’t expect it to be cheap…far from that…but I’ll come back anyway…that’s what hard work is all about …enjoy the money whilst you can..tomorrow may never come…cheerio
