Spring is upon us, which means it’s sandal time for many of us. Super designer Philippe Starck (and he really is on a rampage right now) is at it again, partnering up with Puma. He has a handful of different shoe designs, and I don’t care for any of them except these sandals. A bit pricey, but they look quality.

Recently bought a pair of these, and as with many of phillippe Starcks products they are visually great and functionally awful. As with his lemon squeezer that fails to seperate the pips and gets juice everywhere, these are the most uncomfortable thing ever to grace my feet. I could barley walk ten steps. The rubber is sharp on the edges and they really rub around the toes.
There is no give in the rubber so they dont mould to the shape of your foot.

I have a theory, there are 3 types of design, ‘Eye Candy’ that exist soley to look good, (bad design). And ’functional design‘ that has a practical application and or solves a problem, (Good Design). There is also the ‘Holy Grail Design’ of combining the two (Great Design) which very few manage to achieve, Apple do it consistantly well.

Phillipe starck is a glory seeking design whore who seeks only fame and fortune and not to make great objects.

Why did I buy them then I hear you ask, well, I guess they looked good.
Bad sadly they are not.
As a designer myself I often fall victim to ‘Eye Candy’. Comes with the territory I guess.

Buy a pair of Brazilian Havaianaras instead, cost about $3 and are really comfortable and functional!
also look cool too!

eye-candy v.s. pedi-HELL!

I too bought a pair of these %$&#@#@-ing sandals!
They are the only footwear I have ever come across that kill your feet IMMEDIATELY!

Phillippe Starck is an IDIOT and PUMA should know better than to hire a clueless wanker to design footwear!!! There, I said it!

Thanks for opening my eyes. It’s sad to know people like Starck with such a tragectory can fall so down. Too bad for Puma for entrusting him with this taski. They ought to take them off the market immediatly! Very dissapointing.
